Seattle magazine is looking for a managing editor to oversee the daily operations of the magazine. The person in this position is responsible for driving the overall editorial process, including assigning and editing stories, overseeing the work of other members of the editorial team (including our interns) under direction of the editor in chief, and tracking copy through the editorial process to meet deadlines. Writing is an essential part of every editorial role at Seattle magazine, but the managing editor’s responsibilities in that respect can be determined by experience and areas of interest. This is an incredibly collaborative work environment, so the right candidate will be curious, capable, organized, positive, and a respectful team player.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Generate relevant, local story ideas, particularly related to local city issues and politics, personalities, health trends, the environment, science and technology, and travel
  • Oversee several regular departments, features and cover packages
  • Work together with edit team, art director and digital editor to conceptualize creative ways to tell stories
  • Assign and edit stories to other members of the editorial team, including interns
  • Track all copy through the editorial process; assure that deadlines are met
  • Maintain detailed editorial calendar for each issue
  • Write stories as needed and as time allows, from features and profiles to blurbs and blog posts
  • Write captions and headlines
  • Edit critically for content and style in the magazine’s voice
  • Proof all layouts
  • Attend events as needed to act as an ambassador for the magazine

 

Requirements:

  • A degree in journalism or related field
  • More than 3 years’ editing experience for a print publication
  • More than 5 years’ writing experience for a consumer audience, either print or online
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the print and online editorial process
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the issues and culture of the greater Seattle area
  • Preference given to candidates with proven managerial experience
  • Superb organizational skills and respect for deadlines
  • Keen attention to detail and working knowledge of AP Style
  • People skills essential, particularly compassion, humor, consistency and positivity
